Innovate UK CyberSec KTP – Call

innovate-uk-logoInnovate UK, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are jointly investing up to £0.5m to help UK companies establish new Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) in the area of cyber security. Partnerships between academic institutions and businesses are encouraged to support innovation and help businesses improve their competitiveness and productivity.

This will mean a budget of around 80K to encourage businesses to work with a research organisation and newly-qualified graduate. This funding covers part of the cost of a graduate working in your company on a specific innovation project, with the research partner supervising the graduate’s work.

This initiative will support KTP projects to enable SMEs in the cyber security sector to access research-driven knowledge and capability from academia to help them access strategic opportunities, tackle significant challenges they might be facing and support the development of new innovative processes and solutions.

The final deadline for applications is the 11th May 2016 but it is strongly recommended to
apply as soon as possible.

Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2016/17

Horizon20201The Horizon 2020 work programme for 2016/17 will be published in the autumn (exact date as yet unknown). However early versions of the individual elements of the work programme have been released, giving an indication of call topics to expect in 2016 and  2017. It is important to stress that topics can change in the final versions, however here are the current drafts to consider for potential application:

1) Excellent Science

2) Industrial Leadership

3) Societal Challenges

In order to prepare for this, the EC have organised various “Information Days” for potential applicants. More dates will be released for different calls, however the currently arranged events are as follows:

— Health Challenge Day – 18th September 2015 – Brussels – Focus on ‘Health, demographic change and wellbeing’ – More Info

— Environment and Resource Efficiency – 21st September 2015 – Brussels – Focus on “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials” as well as related call topics such as “Smart and Sustainable Cities” focus areas. – More Info

— Smart, Green and Integrated Transport – 5th November 2015 – Brussels – Focus on, as the name suggests, the “Smart, Green and Integrated Transport” topic. – More Info

 

Healthcare Impact Partnerships 2015/16 – Call

epsrc_logoFollowing the successful pilot in 2013, EPSRC invites proposals for Healthcare Impact Partnerships. This call is open to proposals which are within remit of the cross-cutting capability areas of Disruptive Sensing and Analysis and Medical Device Design and Innovation as defined in the new EPSRC strategy document, towards impact within a healthcare application. Proposals should build upon existing strengths and expertise and demonstrate potential to address an unmet healthcare need and/or offer significant added value over current or alternative healthcare solutions.

A total budget of £5 million is available to support projects that must progress previous EPSRC funded research towards impact within a healthcare application. This call is open to eligible UK academics who have held an EPSRC grant or portfolio of grants relevant to the capabilities of Disruptive Sensing and Analysis or Medical Device Design and Innovation.

This call is closely aligned to the EPSRC Healthcare Technologies strategy; a new way to think about how Engineering and Physical Sciences researchers can tackle current and emerging health challenges facing society.

Applicants wishing to apply must submit an “Intention to Submit” form by the 27th August 2015, with the final closing date falling on the 24th September 2015

RCUK Research Policy – DPhil Internships

RCUK logoResearch Councils UK (RCUK) have launched a policy internship scheme for PhD students to enable them to gain experience of how research can inform policy making.

Research Council Policy Internships provide an opportunity for PhD students funded by the UK Research Councils (e.g. EPSRC) to work for three months in one of a selected group of highly influential policy organisations (e.g. The Royal Society). Successful applicants have the opportunity to work on a policy topic of interest to both the student and the organisation, by producing a briefing paper, participating in a policy inquiry and organising a policy event.

A 3 month extension will be added to the current DPhil funding to account for this, and internships must start before the end of the funding period.

The application deadline varies from depending on the specific Research Council, with EPSRC holding an 18th August 2015 deadline

Kasper Rasmussen URF Award – Congratulations!

indexCongratulations to Kasper Rasmussen who has been awarded the Royal Society University Research Fellowship for 2015. The URF’s are prestigious awards that provide the opportunity for exceptional researchers/early career academics to build an independent research career. These awards offer a minimum of 5 years of independent funding, and only around 45 exceptional candidates are awarded one each year, so a huge congratulations to him!
