EPSRC Healthcare Impact Partnerships 2015/16 – Call

epsrclogowebThe call is now open for the EPSRC Healthcare Impact Partnerships 2015/16. The details are as follows:

Description:
A budget of £5 million is available to support projects that must progress previous EPSRC funded research towards impact within a healthcare application. Proposals should build upon existing strengths and expertise and demonstrate potential to address an unmet healthcare need and/or offer significant added value over current or alternative healthcare solutions. Applications to this call should bring a creative and multidisciplinary approach to the cross cutting capability identified underpinning at least one of the four grand challenge areas.

Eligibility:
This call is open to academics, from eligible UK research organisations, that have been a principal investigator or co-investigator on at least one EPSRC grant that completed on or after 01 April 2010 (inclusive) or is due to finish by April 2016. This grant must be clearly relatable to the cross cutting capabilities of Disruptive Sensing and analysis and/or Medical device design and innovation. Applicants will be required to work in partnership with at least one business partner to progress their previous research outputs towards impact

Assessment:
All proposals should also demonstrate clinical engagement in order to ensure the research will address an unmet clinical need. Proposals will be assessed on the impact generated from their previous EPSRC-funded grant, the suitability of the proposed research team, the engagement of the business partner, the quality of the proposed research and the extent to which further support will progress the previously funded research towards impact in healthcare.

Anyone intending to submit a proposal to this call must register their intent to submit by 16:00 on 27th August 2015. Applicants that do not register their intent to submit before the deadline will be ineligible for the call. The final call deadline will be the 24th September 2015.

Healthcare Impact Partnerships 2015/16 – Call

epsrc_logoFollowing the successful pilot in 2013, EPSRC invites proposals for Healthcare Impact Partnerships. This call is open to proposals which are within remit of the cross-cutting capability areas of Disruptive Sensing and Analysis and Medical Device Design and Innovation as defined in the new EPSRC strategy document, towards impact within a healthcare application. Proposals should build upon existing strengths and expertise and demonstrate potential to address an unmet healthcare need and/or offer significant added value over current or alternative healthcare solutions.

A total budget of £5 million is available to support projects that must progress previous EPSRC funded research towards impact within a healthcare application. This call is open to eligible UK academics who have held an EPSRC grant or portfolio of grants relevant to the capabilities of Disruptive Sensing and Analysis or Medical Device Design and Innovation.

This call is closely aligned to the EPSRC Healthcare Technologies strategy; a new way to think about how Engineering and Physical Sciences researchers can tackle current and emerging health challenges facing society.

Applicants wishing to apply must submit an “Intention to Submit” form by the 27th August 2015, with the final closing date falling on the 24th September 2015

EPSRC Healthcare Technologies NetworkPlus

epsrclogowebFollowing a previous post highlighting the new Healthcare Technologies long term strategy from EPSRC, they have today announced the call for their NetworkPlus proposals. This NetworkPlus programme seeks to establish new research communities around one of the Healthcare Technologies grand challenges.

The detailed aims of the awards are to:
— Bring together experts across relevant research areas
— Identify new research strategies and opportunities for addressing the challenge
— Engage with end users including businesses, clincians and focus groups
— Address obstacles related to the challenge
— Initiate preliminary or feasibility research

Networks are intended to be UK-wide and should have several disciplines and institutions involved. It is essential that User Engagement is considered in the wider network membership, and each proposal must explain and demonstrate how it will target the chosen challenge area.

Around 8 proposals will be funded at a cost of around £625,000 each (£5 mil/8 proposals) and can be 36-48 months in duration. A compulsory “Intention to Submit” will need to be submitted by the 8th September 2015, with the official deadline for this call being the 6th October 2015 at 4pm.

EPSRC New Strategy for Healthcare Technologies

epsrclogoweb

Over the last year, EPSRC’s Healthcare Technologies Theme has engaged with the UK’s research and user communities to develop a new long-term strategy. This strategy has now been published on the EPSRC website.

The strategy was developed in collaboration with the Strategic Advisory Team and through engagement with the research community, users and other funders. The strategy has three elements which form an interconnected matrix and provide a framework for the activities of the theme:

  • Grand Challenges – these are healthcare focussed challenges to which computational, engineering, mathematical and physical scientists can make a significant contribution
  • Cross-cutting research capabilities – these are areas of research which are essential for delivering the grand challenges;
  • Impact and translation toolkit – these are specific topics and issues that we encourage researchers to consider in order to make it more likely that impact will arise, that it will arise more quickly and that it will bring benefit to the UK.
