Department of Computer Science
Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Quantum Group
Fixed-term for up to 1 year
Grade 7; Salary: £29,837 – £36,661 p.a.

The Quantum Group at the Department of Computer Science seeks a postdoctoral research assistant to work with Dr. Jonathan Barrett in the area of quantum information science and the foundations of quantum theory. This is a fixed term contract for one year, starting on 1st September 2014.

The position is funded by the FQXi Large Grant Thermodynamic vs information theoretic entropies in probabilistic theories. The project will investigate information processing in probabilistic theories such as quantum theory, with a focus on the definition and meaning of entropy. The project aims to answer questions such as: what conditions must a probabilistic theory satisfy for thermodynamic entropy to be well defined, and is thermodynamic entropy necessarily the same as information theoretic entropy?

The successful post-holder will be required to undertake research in this area, prepare research papers for publication and to represent the research at workshops and conferences.  Applicants must have (or shortly be expecting to obtain) a PhD in Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related field.

The post, which is a full-time appointment, is available for up to 1 year, will have a salary on the University grade 07S scale (currently £29,837 - £36,661 p.a.), will include membership of USS as well as an annual leave entitlement of 38 days per year (inclusive of all public holidays and university closed periods).
