DPhil topic:

Poromechanics is a simplified mixture theory where a complex fluid-structure interaction problem is replaced by a superposition of both fluid and solid components, each of which represents a fraction of the complete material at every point. It has been successfully used to model various multiphasic systems, particularly within the field of bioengineering. The relative simplicity of its underlying assumptions make it a powerful tool for the modelling of suitable complex systems, and its treatment of fluid-structure interaction makes it an ideal candidate to model coronary perfusion. However, poroelastic cardiac models are extremely difficult to parameterise. In fact, there has never been, to our knowledge, a creditable attempt at characterising one critical parameter in particular -- the permeability tensor field.

The representation of the permeability within current poroelastic cardiac models has been poorly justified and grossly oversimplified. It is the aim of my thesis to robustly derive a permeability based on anatomically accurate vascular data, to embed this permeability within a poroelastic domain.  In addition, I am interested in the validation and transferral of mathematical models into useful clinical tools.
