EATCS

The European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) is an international organisation with the following aims: ``to facilitate the exchange of ideas and results among theoretical computer scientists as well as to stimulate cooperation between the theoretical and the practical community in computer science.''

I have served on the EATCS Council since 2009. My term ends in 2013 and I have recently been nominated for another term. I'll be happy to serve if I am elected.

I was asked to put here a brief statement on the future of EATCS, so here it is.

I think that the most important way that the EATCS achieves its aims is through the support of top-quality conferences. The main conference of EATCS is ICALP, and this is certainly in very strong shape. It is attracting extremely high-quality submissions at the moment, and we want to do everything we can to ensure that this continues. The EATCS also supports a number of more specialized (but still high-quality) conferences and workshops (see this list) and this is important for supporting the exchange of ideas within European (and worldwide) theoretical computer science.

Another useful contribution of the EATCS is raising the profile of theoretical computer science by highlighting outstanding achievements. The EATCS is the sponsor of a number of prizes with outstanding recipient lists (see this list). I will be the chair of the EATCS Award Committee next year.

Last, I'd like to note that I think the cooperation with SIGACT, and other worldwide organisations in theoretical computer science is a good thing. All research is done in an international context, so it makes sense for these organisations to cooperate extensively.
