Picturing classical and quantum Bayesian inference

Rob Spekkens, Perimeter Institute
Quantum Physics and Logic 2010, May 2010, University of Oxford

We present a unifying diagrammatic framework for (classical) Bayesian inference and Bayesian networks, as well as for a quantum generalization of it. The algebraic backbone to this is category-theoretic and the classical vs quantum distinction manifests itself in that while conditional independence for the classical case relies on a commutative Frobenius structure, in the quantum case it is a non-commutative one.
