Modular categories: a survey

Michael Mueger, Radboud University Nijmegen
Flowin'Cat 2010, October 2010, University of Oxford

Modular tensor categories were introduced by Turaev and others in the early nineties in order to codify (some of) the categorical structures behind conformal field theory. In recent years, the investigation of `Topological Quantum Computing', invented by Kitaev and Freedman, has created some interest in modular categories also in the quantum computing community. I will survey both the basics of modular categories and some recent results. Disclaimer: Due to lack of expertise on my part (and since the focus of the workshop is on categories) this will not be an introduction to topological quantum computing!
