BYOD seemed to emerge around 2009 as a questionable solution to rising IT costs, offering more functional and appealing technology choices, but what risks come with it? Was it initiated by companies or user community? How widespread and inevitable is BYOD? Phil Cracknell takes a look at the current situation, highlights a few recent trends, and suggests a way to survive BYOD.

Phil Cracknell is regarded as one of the UK’s leading information security, risk and compliance specialists. With experience spanning 25 years gained in a variety of high-profile technology and management roles, he is a regular speaker at international conferences. Phil has worked extensively in the field of penetration testing, security assessment, firewall design and management, implementation of ecommerce security and PKI deployment. From 1998-2000 Phil was the Global Head of Information Security for Japanese investment banking giant Nomura. Phil has also worked with UK government on the design, implementation, and operations of a new connection to the government network and ISO 27001 compliance. In September 2006 Phil was appointed as UK President of the ISSA; in 2008/9 he was Head of Compliance for Skype in Luxembourg; and most recently he worked as Global Director of Security & Compliance for Yell Group Plc. Currently he is the Head of Information Security for TNT Express.
