Abstract

One interesting use of a small mobile robot is to go up to people in a room, and offer to provide them with information. For example, at an Admissions Open Day such a robot could supply them with information about where to find the lecture theatre, or how to find a particular College. We have a suitable small robot (www.turtlebot.com), which contains a Kinect sensor to allow it to sense its surroundings, and a netbook for its `brain'. This project would either work with the real robot, or develop software for a simulated robot, and could either focus on the low-level navigation software; or more on the high-level functions; or even on speech recognition. The project has the potential to be split among a small group of students.
