Abstract

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) represents one of the largest shifts in technology for years. Smart devices are set to become omnipresent in our homes, companies, and cities. Unfortunately, the security risks to these devices and infrastructures are currently assessed using methodologies which were established prior to the pervasive (and often automated) coupling of digital and cyber-physical systems. This may mean that there are risks left unaddressed or unmanaged. The aim of this project will be to investigate the extent to which current security risk assessment approaches allow the risks present with IoT systems to be adequately managed. Within this project, the student will select and examine at least two risk assessment techniques, and then consider how these can be applied to IoT scenarios (e.g., smart cities, or critical infrastructure). Using the knowledge gained in this process, the student will reflect on the utility of these approaches and compose a final report including findings and suggestions for future risk assessment techniques.

Prerequisites: Some knowledge of web security and networking would be ideal for students desiring to do this project.
