Abstract
Co-supervised by Systems Security labRecent work by the Systems Security Lab has been investigating image injection attacks on satellite downlink protocols, measuring the extent to which stealthy modifications can be made to the image whilst it's being transmitted in flight.
In this project, the student will measure the impact of such an attack on real-world systems through the analysis of the FIRMS forest fire detection algorithm.By considering its implementation, the student will measure the most effective mechanisms for manipulating the image to fool the result of the algorithm, starting ficticious fires and masking existing ones.
The student will require knowledge of the C programming language, and ideally have an existing interest in either space systems security or image processing. Intended for either third or fourth year projects.
