Big Data mission to New Zealand, February 2015

The British High Commission in New Zealand is pleased to announce that it will host a UK-to-NZ mission on Big Data to visit Wellington and/or Auckland, New Zealand around 17 to 20 February, 2015.

A UK Big Data mission will support commercially-orientated collaborative research in New Zealand’s emerging big data, complex systems, and applications research sector. The mission will coincide with two New Zealand conferences on Big Data.

The first conference (www.multicoreworld.com/) will be held in Wellington. Entitled Multicore, it will include Computing for SKA (Square Km Array telescope) in New Zealand. Now on its 4th edition, world experts will come together for two days of sessions in high-technology evolution and its applications. Collocated with Multicore (17-18 February) is the workshop “HPC in the Cloud -the case of the SKA” (19-20 February). More details should be announced soon on the conference website. Note, the High Commission will also shortly announce a mission on ‘Sensors in the Built Environment’.

The second conference on Neuro-Computing and Evolving Intelligence (NCEI’15  www.kedri.aut.ac.nz/events/all-events )will be held at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), 19-20 February 2015 in the Sir Paul Reeves Building, 2 Governor Fitzroy Place in, Auckland. The theme of the conference is ‘Intelligence Information Technology for Big Data’ and topics will include:

  • Novel methods of computational intelligence,
  • Neurocomputing and neuroinformatics, Bioinformatics,
  • Data mining and decision support, Pattern Recognition and the Study of Creativity.:
  • Big and Stream Data Analytics
  • Spiking Neural Network Computation
  • High Performance Neuromorphic System
  • Novel Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI)
  • Novel Motion Data Analysis Technology
  • Predictive Personalised Modelling of non-Communicable Diseases
  • Predicting Response to Treatment
  • Personalised Modelling in Bioinformatics
  • Predictive Modelling on Ecological and Environmental Data
  • Big Data in Radio-Astronomy
  • Computer Vision and Image Processing for Dynamic Data Analysis
  • Visualisation of Scientific Data
  • Novel Human-Computer Interfaces
  • Complex System Optimisation
  • Collaborative and Distributed Systems Design

Some funding (up to £1500) will be available to some 4 UK R&D participants who seek to pursue a commercially-orientated collaboration with NZ (on a first-come basis for those who qualify). You are encouraged to register and attend one or both conferences according to your interests. Registration details should be available from the websites in the near future.

Please respond to the questions below and e-mail Steve.Thompson@fco.gov.uk if you would be interested to join the mission.

Questions for UK applicants:

  1. Name and position of applicant:
  2. Applicant’s organisation name and address:
  3. Nature of your organisation’s business and R&D interest:
  4. Organisations you would like to meet in New Zealand:
  5. Types of R&D collaboration you wish to pursue in NZ, and potential contacts
  6. Any other comments.

Further Information

You may also wish to visit organisations of interest in New Zealand before or after the meetings, and the High Commission will be pleased to assist in making the necessary contacts and arrangements.

You will need to book your own travel and accommodation. We understand that the Expedia website sometimes offers good deals on flights to NZ. Try the conference website and the Wotif site for a good overview of Auckland and Wellington hotels. You will also find useful information about New Zealand business and travel at http://www.newzealand.com/uk/.

Participants will need to follow a Claims procedure. One way to do this, once you have (for example) been approved for funding and bought your air ticket for £1500 or more, will be to claim as soon as purchased, from BIS (Business, Innovation and Skills) in London. Flights count as one of the acceptable pre-payments. Note: if you travel above premium economy, you will need to show the premium economy price and claim only for that portion.

New Zealand uses 230 volts AC at 50 Hz. Plugs are Australian type with slanting pins. New Zealanders do not generally follow the custom of giving a tip to waiters, taxi drivers, and other service people.

Call for Papers: IEEE Science and Information (SAI) Conference 2015

Science and Information Conference 2015 will be held in London, U.K from July 28-30, 2015. It is hosted by The Science and Information Organization, and is being organized with sponsorship and support from IEEE and Springer. Technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE Computer Chapter UKRI.

The conference is a premier venue for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from Computer Science, Electronics and Communication related areas. The event will feature specialized keynote talks, contributed papers, special sessions, poster presentations, workshops, and tutorials on theory and practice.

CERN Workshop: Cloud Services for File Synchronisation and Sharing

I’m adding this to the blog following an email out across department. The workshop is taking place 17-18 November 2014 and organisers are looking for participants as well as attendees.

The objective of the workshop is to share experience and progress for technologies and services for cloud storage file synchronization and file sharing.

Cloud storage services for scientific and technical activities allow groups of researches to share, transfer and synchronize files between their personal computers, mobile devices and large scientific data repositories. Adding synchronization capabilities to existing large-scale data repository of an experiment (typically above the 1-PB mark) creates an opportunity for new scenarios for data analysis. The challenges include seamless data sharing across working groups and providing an extremely easy to use interface available on all client platforms.

The workshop coincides with the launch of such a service at CERN with the intent to serve CERN research communities integrating the existing disk storage (currently about 50 PB of physics data) with a 10,000 physicists community. The user community CERN is serving for the LHC is highly mobile and completely distributed (more than 100 countries).

In the workshop we will review the state of the art technologies and evaluate the experience in running such services for technical and scientific communities and to present the plans of concrete service implementations.

We invite you submit abstracts (abstract submission 26-AUG-2014 — 30-SEP-2014) using the link from the workshop page (https://indico.cern.ch/event/336753/call-for-abstracts/submit).

ICT Proposers’ Day | 9-10 October 2014

The ICT Proposers’ day 2014 is a networking event organised by the European Commission to promote European ICT Research and Innovation. The event focuses on the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2015 and will be held in Florence, Italy on the 9th and 10th of October 2014.

This event, organised by the European Commission, is specifically dedicated to networking and promoting research and innovation in the field of Information and Communication Technologies. The event will focus on networking for the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2015.

The event, free of charge, offers an exceptional occasion to build quality partnerships as it will connect academia, research institutes, industrial stakeholders, SMEs and government actors from all over Europe. The registration to attend the event is now open. Read more and register.

Future Calls: Cyber-Physical Systems / Human Language Understanding

A future call has been announced by CHIST-ERA which I think will have a broad interest across the department.

  • Resilient and Trustworthy Cyber-Physical Systems

Update: Two topics were announced however the second is not open to UK researchers as EPSRC is not participating in the Human Language Understanding call.

The CHIST-ERA ERA-NET is a consortium of 18 research funding organisations (including EPSRC). CHIST-ERA specifically promotes multidisciplinary and transnational ICT research with the potential to lead to significant breakthroughs. The funding organisations jointly support research projects selected in the framework of CHIST-ERA.

Below is a link to a flyer which gives more information, including a quick-view list of keywords which will allow you to decide if the calls are relevant to you (e.g. intrusion detection, verification, software and systems engineering).

A key point to note about this call is that it can be shaped by those who attend the CHIST-ERA Conference (Istanbul, June 17-18). If you would like to feed into the full topic description registration is still open: http://conference2014.chistera.eu
