UK ICT Pioneers is a unique partnership between EPSRC and key stakeholders that aims to recognise the most exceptional UK PhD students in ICT-related topics who are able to communicate and demonstrate the excellence and exploitation potential of their research. The competition is open to all second and third year UK postgraduate research students in ICT-related subjects including but not restricted to Electronics, Communications, Computer Science and Human-Computer Interfaces and Photonics.

Kevin Burrage was invited to be a Plenary Speaker at ICNAAM 2014 in Rhodes, Greece, between the 22nd and 27th of September 2013. He will also be a Plenary Speaker at IASTED 2014 in Gaborone, Botswana between the 1st and 3rd of September 2014. Kevin Burrage was also invited to the International Symposium on Fractional PDEs: Theory, Numerics and Applications as a Plenary Speaker between 3rd and 5th June, 2013 in Salve Regina University, Newport, RI, USA. His talk was on 'New nonlocal approaches for modelling the electrophysiology of the human heart'.

Doctoral student Ciara Dangerfield has been awarded an EPSRC Doctoral Prize. The prize is aimed at helping to retain the best students receiving EPSRC funding: to develop beyond the end of the PhD, to launch a successful career in research, and to increase the impact of the DPhil research in terms of publications, knowledge transfer and outreach.

Dr Ana Minchole has been awarded a Marie Curie Intra-European fellowship, bringing her to the Department for the next 2 years. Dr Blanca Rodriguez will be Dr Minchole's sponsor in this project within the Department of Computer Science, Computational Biology Group.
