Stanislav (Standa) Živný is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor at Merton College. He received his doctorate (DPhil) from Oxford in 2009, after studying at Charles University in the Czech Republic, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and the University of Turku in Finland. His research is in algorithms, computational complexity, and discrete optimisation, with a particular focus on applying mathematics to the design and analysis of algorithms. His work has advanced the mathematical foundations of algorithms and computational complexity for broad classes of optimisation and constraint satisfaction problems. His research has been supported by a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, an ERC Starting Grant, and an ERC Consolidator Grant. From 2022 to 2026, he served as Editor-in-Chief of SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics. Within Oxford’s Department of Computer Science, he served as Director of Teaching for three years before serving as Deputy Head of Department for Teaching for two years.
