Abstract

China has the world’s largest online population, and smartphones are used in every part of daily life, from social networking to digital payment in even the most remote corners of the country. Unlike the highly platform-consolidated app markets of western countries, China uniquely has more than 20 app stores operated by private enterprises. This raises unique challenges and questions regarding the app ecosystem and the data monetization model behind it. In this project, we will build upon our existing research experience of having collected and analysed >1million mobile apps from the UK app market to collect popular mobile apps from the top 10 mobile app stores in China, and analyse the data tracking activities behind the apps. In this way we will generate some first-hand understanding about the Chinese app market ecosystem.
