Adaptive proformas for accident and emergency medicine

Bryan S Todd

Abstract:

This paper presents a simple mathematical model of the computerized patient record. The model is focussed on the requirement that during entry of a case, the computer program should interactively generate a proforma that is adapted to the particular clinical problem. Thus only essential information is collected and displayed, the number of mouse clicks is minimized thus simplifying data-entry, and prompts and warnings are given that help avoid oversights and errors. These ideas are illustrated by the documentation of patients presenting to an accident and emergency department.
