Braided Algebra

Shahn Majid, Queen Mary University of London
Flowin'Cat 2010, October 2010, University of Oxford

In the 1990s I developed over about 60 papers a new kind of algebra done entirely with braid and tangle diagrams in which information flows down strands much as in a flow chart or wiring diagram but where there is a nontrivial braiding where strands cross. This includes quantum groups or Hopf algebras in braided categories (braided groups) and gauge theory. I review the theory and update it with a notion of complex conjugation in such a setting (a bar category).
