Camelot: an Adaptable Knowledge Management System for Loosely Structed Data
Camelot was an EPSRC funded research project.
Brief Description
The primary goal of this project is to improve information systems for professional users whose information needs are characterised by heterogeneous, evolving, partially-structured data with incomplete descriptions - e.g. clinicians, research scientists, media producers, archivists, and digital librarians. The project combines experience with large scale practical development of such tools with recent theoretical developments on algorithms and optimisation techniques for description logics. It will develop a flexible overall architecture for description logic based knowledge management systems. The architecture will support the use of the description logics as flexible, evolutionary schemata and indexing mechanisms for closely coupled database systems. It will develop an intelligent query management system which takes maximum advantage of the complementary strengths of the description logic and database management engines. It will also provide a principled means of linking the knowledge management system with high quality user environments and other information management services.
