The international conference on constraint programming (CP 2010) will be in St Andrews this year. The conference is organized by a local organizing committee with backing from the Association of Constraint Programming. We expect a range of speakers from all over the world who lead the field of constraint programming.
The conference runs a Doctoral Programme as a mini-conference for Ph.D. students in the field. The doctoral programme typically organizes talks specifically for the Ph.D. students. The talks are given by very senior people in the field. In the past there have been talks on professional development (e.g. professional ethics) and experimental methods in artificial intelligence. Students present their work to each other, and also have a networking meal. Students participate fully in the main conference.
The proposal is to open up the CP 2010 doctoral programme to SICSA students who would not normally attend CP (typically because the supervisor(s) are not in the field), but who may be able to make use of constraint programming in their work. The audience is students who have an interest in combinatorial problems or constrained optimization.
Constraint programming is part of the modelling and abstraction theme, and there is an established base of research into it in Scottish universities. The conference takes place on 6-10th September 2010. For residential places, the fee will be in the region of £500. For local students (or others not requiring accommodation), the fee is £160.
