Elisa Passini was invited on the 27th of May to give a talk at the "3Rs Symposium 2015", University of Edinburgh.

The NC3Rs is a UK-based scientific organisation dedicated to replacing, refining and reducing the use of animals in research. Elisa’s talk "Inter-subject variability in cardiac disease and drug action: insights from Virtual Assay", was focused on how computational modelling may help to reduce, refine and eventually replace animal experiments.

Elisa Passini has been awarded a Travel Grant to present her work at the 39th Annual Meeting of EWGCCE that will take place in Milan, on the 21th- 22th of June.

It is the first time that the 3Rs prize has been awarded to a computer science paper since its launch in 2005, and the first time that the highest accolade has gone to a PhD student: Oliver Britton from the Department of Computer Science.

The work has been recognised for its potential to reduce the number of animals used in research, particularly in the safety assessment of new drugs.

This book will provide a detailed history and discussion of the use of human tissues as an alternative to animal-based testing for assessing the efficacy and safety of new medicines. Beginning by providing the history and background of animal-based testing, this text then describes in detail the issues relating to access to human cells and tissue and the rules and regulations governing their use. The book contains chapters on culture, assays, microfluidics and body-on-a-chip technology, as well as chapters on emerging technologies and techniques such as engineered organs. Each chapter comprehensively covers a technique, from its utilisation and methodology to the opportunities and limitations of the method. Written and edited by Worldwide experts within the field, this book will be an essential text for biochemists and researchers working in translational medicine in both industry and academia.

Professor Kevin Burrage and Dr Alfonso Bueno-Orovio just returned from the Dagstuhl seminar on Multiscale Spatial Computational Systems Biology that ran from 23 to 28 November, 2014. T

he Schloss Dagstuhl Leibniz Centre for Informatics is the world's premier venue for informatics, where world-class scientists, promising young researchers, and practitioners come together to exchange their knowledge and to discuss their research findings in informatics and its applications. The centre is based in a castle built in the 1760s and situated in a beautiful wooded area of Saarland in western Germany There were about 60 participants from around the world and over the five days they were separated into eight groups to address fundamental problems in the multiscale modelling of complex biological and physiological dynamics.

They made new contacts, worked hard, started new collaborations and had a great time.
