Associate Professor Reuben Binns has been appointed Co-Director of the Responsible Technology Institute (RTI). He joins Professor Marina Jirotka, Institute Director, in leading the internationally recognised centre of excellence focused on responsible technology.

Professor Binns is Associate Professor of Human Centred Computing in the department, where his research spans computer science, law, and philosophy. His work focuses on the interplay between data protection, machine learning, and the regulation of and by technology. He has made significant contributions to the study of algorithmic accountability, data rights, and the governance of emerging technologies, and recently published a study uncovering the impact of Uber’s dynamic pricing on drivers and passengers.

Since joining the department in 2015 as a postdoctoral researcher, Professor Binns has held a range of academic and policy-facing roles. Between 2018 and 2020, he was Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence at the Information Commissioner’s Office, where he advised on the relationship between AI systems and data protection regulation.

About the Responsible Technology Institute

The RTI brings together researchers from across disciplines and sectors to explore how technological innovation can be designed and deployed responsibly. With academic and industrial partners across the globe, the Institute leads projects that address the ethical, social, and legal dimensions of digital technologies.

As Co-Director, Professor Binns will work alongside Professor Jirotka to further the RTI’s mission to develop culturally informed approaches to responsibility in technology design, development, and policy.
