The Collegiate University

Every student studying for a degree at Oxford, and every permanent member of academic staff, is associated with one of the University's 38 colleges. The colleges are independent, self-governing units, and they provide the benefits of a small, tightly knit, interdisciplinary community within the larger, internationally renowned University. For postgraduate students like those in SEP, the colleges provide some accommodation, meals, sports and social facilities, and pastoral care, but the relevant University department provides all teaching and supervision.

Most colleges specialise in undergraduate students, and have a smaller proportion postgraduates; the seven "graduate" colleges specialise in postgraduate students, and most have no undergraduates. Essentially all the colleges specialise in full-time students, and have only a tiny proportion of part-time students; precisely one - Kellogg College - specialises in part-time students.

Kellogg College has the most students among Oxford's graduate colleges, and about three quarters of its students are part-time. All SEP permanent academics are members of Kellogg; most SEP students are members; and SEP students form the biggest cohort in the College. Kellogg is the college that best understands the needs of part-time students, and it is the college that we recommend to SEP applicants.

A small proportion (about 10%) of SEP students do end up at colleges other than Kellogg. In some cases, that is because they were already a member of that college, perhaps as an undergraduate. A handful of the other colleges do accept applications from SEP students. It is a different set of colleges for Software Engineering and Software & Systems Security; please visit the colleges tab on the MSc in Software Engineering and MSc in Software and Systems Security course pages to find which college offer these courses. Apart from Kellogg, each such college accepts at most a couple of students a year, and only for Michaelmas Term. Do note that each college has its own selection criteria, and accepts or rejects applications as it sees fit; only Kellogg has agreed to offer a place to every SEP student who applies there.
