About Us

The Professional Master’s programme at the Department of Computer Science is a centre for advanced education and applied research within the University of Oxford.

Established in 1993, the programme exists to bring together theory and practice in software engineering and software and systems security, facilitate connection between leading researchers and practitioners, and to make the expertise of the University available to those who wish to study part-time while continuing in full-time employment.

The programme has its origins in the short industrial courses delivered to partner organisations by leading researchers through the Computing Laboratory (now the Department of Computer Science) during the 1980s. With support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the courses were revised and extended to provide a full academic programme at master's level.

Reflecting the latest research activity of the programme academics, we are continuously developing the programme, finding new ways to relate the principles of software engineering to evolving industry practice.
