A tribute to first doctoral student Joan Walsh

Emeritus Professor Joan Eileen Walsh, the department’s first DPhil student, has passed away. Joan was the first person to receive a DPhil from the University of Oxford Computing Laboratory, which later became the Department of Computer Science. She studied under the supervision of Professor Leslie Fox, the department’s first professor. She received her DPhil in 1961, having obtained a degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford in 1954.

Joan was born on 7 October 1932 and passed away at the age of 85 on 30 December 2017.
