Department of Computer Science, Parks Road, Oxford.

Senior Research Associate in Semantic Technology and Artificial Intelligence

Full time, Fixed-term contract up to 2 years

Grade 8: Salary £43,414 - £46,047 p.a. (Post may be under-filled at Grade 7 £34,308 - £42,155 p.a.)

We are pleased to announce the availability of two full-time Senior Research Associate positions in Semantic Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, available for up to 2 years. Researchers in all topics related to semantic technology will be considered, with a preference towards researchers working on knowledge graphs, stream reasoning, and in particular on integrating semantic technologies and machine learning.

The successful candidates will work across several related research projects in these areas including ConCur (http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/isg/projects/ConCur/), SKGPC (https://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/isg/projects/Samsung/) and UK Fires (http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/isg/projects/UK-Fires/).

The research team aims to push forward the capabilities of semantic technologies, examining a number of directions such as: the relationship between symbolic and sub-symbolic AI; knowledge graph technologies, including the (semi-) automation of knowledge graph construction and curation; distributed storage and reasoning; and stream reasoning. The team also works. on applications of semantic technology; for example in the UK Fires project we are using semantic technology to help identify the lowest risk path to achieving net zero emissions in the UK by 2050.

The successful candidate will join a world leading group with expertise in both the theory and practice of semantic technologies as recently recognised by best paper awards at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), and the International Conference on the Semantic Web (ISWC), and Test of Time awards at the International Conference on Knowledge Representation (KR) and the International Conference on Automated Deduction (CADE). The group also has strong ties with industry: we have ongoing projects funded by eBay, Samsung Research and Siemens, and we have a spin-out company (Oxford Semantic Technologies) successfully commercialising our RDFox Knowledge Graph system (https://www.oxfordsemantic.tech/).

See http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/isg/krr for more information about the research group and our various research projects.

The primary selection criteria are a relevant PhD/DPhil with post-qualification research experience, in the broad area of artificial intelligence and semantic technologies. Experience in technologies such as Datalog, RDF, and OWL, and a background in theoretical computer science, would also be desirable.

Whilst the role is a Grade 8 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at Grade 7 with a title of “Research Associate” (Grade 7: £34,308 - £42,155 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.

Applicants will be required to upload a supporting statement, setting out how you meet the selection criteria.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 20 March 2023. Interviews are expected to be held in late March or in April.

We are a Stonewall Top 100 Employer, Living Wage and Mindful Employer, holding an Athena Swan Bronze Award, HR excellence in Research and Race Equality Charter Bronze Award.

Our staff and students come from all over the world and we proudly promote a friendly and inclusive culture. Diversity is positively encouraged, through diversity groups and champions, as well as a number of family-friendly policies, such as the right to apply for flexible working and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence, for example shared parental leave.

Demonstrating a commitment to provide equality of opportunity. We would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic applicants who are currently under-represented within the Computer Science Department. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.
