Associate formal semantic description to Data Services

Gianluca Cima ( University of Rome “La Sapienza” )

Effectively documenting data services is a crucial issue for organizations, both for governing their own data, that often evolve rapidly, and for interoperation purposes. Current popular techniques manually associate APIs (Application Programming Interface) to data services, and describe their semantics with ad-hoc methods, often using natural language. Conversely, in this seminar, it is proposed a new way of thinking at it. We base our proposal on the Ontology-Based Data Access (OBDA) paradigm, where an ontology is used to provide a semantic layer mapped to the data sources of an organization. The basic idea is to explain the semantics of a data service (assumed to be formulated by means of a query over the sources) using the elements of the domain ontology.
