The origin of the abstract formalism of quantum theory, and exactly what is responsible for the power of quantum information processing are two important questions for a good understanding of quantum mechanics. I'll review a framework in which many probabilistic theories - including quantum and classical theories - can be defined, and these questions can be precisely posed. Depending on interest, I will then discuss some of the insights which can be gained from looking at quantum theory from this vantage point.
