Data Provenance

Professor Peter Buneman ( University of Edinburgh )
Provenance is becoming an increasingly important issue in scientific
programming and scientific databases.  It is closely related to data
annotation, data quality, program slicing, workflows and other topics
in databases.  While a number of useful inroads have been made into
the study of provenance, there is a lack of a unifying model and no
clear definition of the fundamental problems.  In this talk I shall
attempt to survey the situation and to describe how the study of
provenance has helped in our understanding of database query and
update languages.
