Should Alice and Bob join Facebook? Tackling security issues in social networking

Angela Sasse ( UCL )
Social networking sites have become immensely popular, with millions of
users publishing data about themselves.  Young people in particular seem
to be unaware of the risks associated with disclosing information about
themselves, and the Information Commissioner's Office published guidance
for "safe" conduct in social networking aimed at this group earlier
this year.  But is it really possible to join such sites without creatng
risks to personal safety and privacy, i.e. can Alice and Bob join the
craze and still be secure? The seminar will review a range of attacks
that have been perpetrated using social networking sites, and discuss
what changes in the design of social networking sites and in user
behaviour are needed to prevent them.
