Case Studies in Mathematical Modelling:  2008-2009

Synopsis

In the second term students will build on the skills learned in the Mathematical Modelling Classes in the first term and students will look at a case study in depth. They will work in small groups under the guidance of a tutor to take a problem from its initial statement through its mathematical formulation and analysis to the stage where a short report is written and a presentation made to the rest of the class. The case studies vary each year but recent examples studied include: pantograph dynamics, laying a submarine cable, ant foraging, valuing traders bonuses, catalytic converters, spurious signals in a sonar array, financial crashes.

Late requests, and requests sent by email, will not be considered. All requests must be approved by the relevant Computer Science departmental committee and can only be submitted using this form.
