SIGMOD 2010 Programming Contest

Supervisor

Abstract

ACM SIGMOD 2010 is a premier forum for research in databases and data mangement. Starting 2009, SIGMOD comes with a programming contest addressed to students at undergraduate and MSc levels. In general, such contests involve building various components of a database management system. Details of the next contest are given at the URL http://dbweb.enst.fr/events/sigmod10contest/. Besides being very challenging and prestigious, the contest also comes with a non-trivial prize for the best implementation. For instance, the prize was of 5,000 USD last year. Interested students should contact me as soon as possible, preferably before February 2010. The submission of a first working system is due April 4, 2010 and the final submission (only by finalists of the first round) is due May 30, 2010. I am willing to supervise up to two students working independently on this project. The successful candidates will be selected after an informal interview during which I will assess their potential to finish the project in time and possibly win the contest.

Prerequisites: Strong C (or C++ or Java) skils; Very good marks in courses on databases and data structures and algorithms (or evidence of equivalent qualification).
