Senior Researcher on FADAMS: Foundations of Factorised Data Management Systems
Fixed term for up to 2 years, starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of extension until 31 May 2021

 Grade 8: Salary £39,992 – £47,722 p.a.

The Department of Computer Science has a superb new opportunity for a full time Senior Researcher on the FADAMS (Foundations of Factorised Data Management Systems) project, for up to 2 years, with the possibility of extension until 31 May 2021, working with Professor Dan Olteanu and his academic and industrial collaborators.

As a researcher on this project, you will investigate fundamental challenges in scalable data management at the confluence of structural compression, distribution, and approximation for database and machine learning workloads and will build a system that incorporates the techniques and algorithmic insights on distributed and approximate processing of factorized data. Current research results on these objectives can be found on the web page of the FDB research project: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/projects/FDB/index.html.

You will hold a relevant Ph.D. /D.Phil. with post-qualification research experience (OR be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil if underfill), together with a strong publication record in at least one of the following areas: theoretical computer science, databases, algorithms, distributed systems, and machine learning; and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field. Experience of supervising staff and making grant applications is desirable.

Whilst the role is a grade 8 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 7 (Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 23 October 2017. Interviews will be held on 31 October 2017.

The post, which is a full time appointment, is funded by ERC and is available for up to 2 years as soon as possible (with the possibility of extension until 31 May 2021), has a salary on the University grade 08S scale (currently £39,992 – £47,722 p.a.).  This includes membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) and has an annual leave entitlement of 38 days per year (inclusive of all public holidays and university closed periods).
