1. Professional and Social Background

I was Professor of Computational Systems Biology at the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Integrative Systems Biology from 2007-2015. I am now a Visiting Professor to the Department from 2016-2019. I am a member of the Computational Cardiac Modelling and Simulation group within Computer Science.

I continue to share my time between Oxford and the School of Mathematics at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT http://www.qut.edu.au), Brisbane, Australia, where I am Professor of Computational Mathematics.

I was a supernumerary fellow of New College at Oxford University between 2008-2012.  Before coming to Oxford I  was a Federation Fellow of the Australian Research Council (2003-2008) at the University of Queensland.

I am married to Pamela, who is also in the Mathematics Department at QUT, and we have two children at Queensland.  Matt has finished his medical program and is a registrar, Lauren is her final year of her Medical program.

6. Specific research projects
My current main research project is to understand how structure and dynamics, whether it be at the cell level or at tissue level, inform function.  The main focus here is in the electrophysiology of the heart. At the cell level we have developed new stochastic techniques for simuating ion channel dynamics.  While at the tissue level we are developing a new theory based on fractional diffusion to offer insights into the dyamics of cardiac electrophysiology in the setting of heterogeneous tissue.  We have a paper submitted to Nature Communications and we are currently validating our model against Diffusion Tensor MRI data.
