Craig Tranfield - curriculum vitae

Qualifications

Profile

I combine a good balance of working in a quality controlled procedural manner with imagination and originality. Always keen to complete tasks on time to a suitable, although not necessarily perfect, standard, which is consistent with my status as a chartered engineer.

Since moving into computing in 1981 I have gone through being an accomplished program writer, small systems developer, 4GL developer, database and systems manager, systems integrator, network designer, department manager and business and IT consultant.

Currently I am the Computer Manager for the Department of Computer Science at Oxford University with responsibility to oversee, control, and develop the provision and support of computing resources to the work of the department. In conjunction with this, a limited amount of time is made available to engage in external consultancy and voluntary public service.

In summary

I have many years experience in Information Technology ranging from:
software development
using 3GL and 4GL (Powerhouse), covering the full scope of problem definition and analysis, through design and coding to the production of user/support documentation, training and product implementation;
operations management
incorporating production of BS5750 procedures, hardware systems configuration and systems migration, (VAX/VMS, DEC Alpha, Prime, Norsk Data, Windows, SUN, linux);
networking
design, implementation, management, monitoring, and development of computer networks;
IS management
ranging from departmental organisation, the wider aspects of multi-vendor hardware and software integration, design and implementation management of a networking strategy and the design of a corporate information system overall strategy;
IS consultancy
addressing business strategy and its relationship to IT strategy, development of IT plan and oversight of implementation from product and supplier selection to installed system.
All of which has been supported with a variety of training courses, including a 3 year MSc in Computer Science and the OU Professional Diploma in Management, industry certifications including CCNA (2010), and rounded off with a balance of external interests covering mind, body and soul.
