Equality, diversity and inclusion
We are committed to promoting and nurturing a diverse, inclusive and equal culture. Our goal is to ensure that all our students and staff, from a variety of backgrounds and with a wide range of experiences and characteristics, feel that they belong and have an equal opportunity to thrive here.
We are carrying out a programme of continuous improvement to help us achieve our objectives and ensure that:
- diverse perspectives and experiences are encouraged;
- individuals are valued, respected and treated alike;
- and individuals of all backgrounds can come together and fully contribute their talents to our growing community.
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Facilitator, Miranda Raven, works closely with our Director for Academic Environment on diversity and inclusion across the department. Additionally, our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, made up of staff and student representatives, meets every term.
We work closely with both the divisional ED&I team and the University's Equality and Diversity Unit. We fully support the University's commitment to 'fostering an inclusive culture which promotes equality, values diversity and maintains a working, learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all its staff and students are respected.'
Athena Swan Bronze Award
We have held an Athena Swan Bronze Award since 2014, reflecting our longstanding commitment to promoting and supporting gender equality. Read more about the Athena Swan Charter.
Race Equality Strategy
The department is fully supportive of the University's Race Equality Strategy.
