Biography
The Athena Swan Charter is a framework used to support and advance gender equality within higher education and research. Computer Science currently holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award.
I work alongside the Director for Academic Environment (David Kay) on Athena Swan coordination, and other work to promote equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) across the department. I collaborate with a range of staff and students, working with HR, academic administration, communications and outreach, and other functions. I liaise with the MPLS Division's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team, and with EDI networks across the University and at other institutions.
I can be contacted about equality, diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing in the department. I work Mondays to Thursdays, using a combination of on-site and remote working.
I first joined the University in 2015 as a first-generation undergraduate student from a low-income household, studying English Language and Literature at Hertford College, having previously participated in the UNIQ summer school (Oxford's access programme for state school students). As an undergraduate, my experience of living with social anxiety disorder in particular led me to become involved with the Oxford Student Union's Disabilities Campaign, chairing the campaign for a year. I also developed an interest in disability studies during this time, exploring disability in fairytales and disabled embodiment on stage within my English coursework and dissertation.
After working in several of the University's departments via the Temporary Staffing Service, I joined the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences on a permanent basis in 2019 as an HR Assistant, spending two years there before moving to the Department of Sociology as a Senior HR Officer in 2021. While at Sociology, I also undertook a part-time secondment for the equivalent of one day per week across six months with the University's HR Policy Team, primarily working on New Ways of Working (hybrid and remote working). I joined Computer Science in my current role in October 2022, and I am currently undertaking a CIPD Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic People Management - within my studies, I am particularly interested in employee voice, two-way communication and culture change, and exploring how these areas can positively contribute towards achieving EDI and wider organisational objectives.
